All Pain No Gain

All Pain No Gain

This Ohio one man show, Paul Linville, specializes in metal and industrial but has been known to throw left field curves with country, bluegrass, and even pop touches – though the latter is no surprise as his songs are always catchy. In 2011, he contributed a pair of tracks to our compilation album Neighborhood Classics before moving on to other projects. In more recent times, he has continued work under the All Pain No Gain moniker, such as the excellent single below, “Don’t Be So Hard On Me.”

He’s also a member of the group Rosenedge, who have steadily rocked the Midwest and beyond for years. Prior to that, he had performed with outfits such as Bedlam, and also received some acclaim for the project Black Element (a CD that was programmed, a la Prince, so that the tracks were unskippable – you had to listen straight through, just the way nature intended!). And to this day, continues cranking out the jams from his home studio, and performing live in a multitude of capacities. Alvin Choate

Alvin started playing drums in a funk band at age 13 in Bluefield, WV. He lent his talents to a number of different bands before eventually deciding that he want to shape his own musical direction. After moving to Columbus, Ohio, in a bid to increase his recognition and fan base, Choate has begun to develop a following for his distinct solo compositions, which are often a blend of jazz, funk, blues and rock. When asked about the particulars of his sound, he said, “I am using a Yamaha keyboard to compose my tracks. I play the drums and keyboard and some bass guitar as my main instruments but the horns, violins, et cetera are courtesy of the programs on my keyboard. I use a music software called Studio One made by Presonus to record.”

In 2018, Alvin released his first full length album with our label, Diamond In The Night, a vintage sounding record of instrumental originals paying sonic tribute to those classic jazz, funk, and r & b vibes from the 70s and 80s. Special Delivery soon followed, an effort which found Alvin branching out to include his soulful vocals on a handful of tracks. As always, these compositions were recorded in his own basement studio, an intimate, accessible setup which allows him to pursue the majestic perfection of his vision, as he continues striving toward his goals as writer/producer.

Continua

Continua is a versatile quartet, currently based out of Florida, the brainchild of darkwave singer Bishop Battle, Day of Awakening’s Brian Buckalew, guitarist/songwriter Jason Mulkey and guitarist Tyler Faulkner.

They borrow from the boundless idiom of alternative rock in order to sculpt an engrossing narrative by seamlessly combining the spirit and awe of glam rock, the grit of grunge, and the appeal of pop. Continua’s sound includes the use of instrumental and vocal layering, minor tonality, and combining guitar and bass driven tracks
with electronic synthesizers, as evidenced in the successful new track
“The Darkest City” from their debut album Daybreak, which touts a
dark and hook-y alt-rock charm in the soaring vocals and jagged
guitars. Other notable tracks include the contemplative and theatrically
dynamic “Echoes,” as well as the intricately brooding yet driving
“Daybreak.” Continua’s unapologetic avant-garde sound and
performances, which have impressed audiences through Daybreak’s
musicality, top-notch performances, and songwriting, as well as their
engaging stage presence, makes Continua one of the surprise top
genre-bending breakout artists of 2022 – and beyond.

Bishop Battle At Craft & Vinyl

Exquisite Noise artist Bishop Battle, from Cincinnati, recently performed at this craft beer/vinyl album hybrid in Columbus, Ohio. Above is one video documenting his performance. It was part of a “New Music Showcase” and despite some technical glitches, overall the show proved a success. Our very own Matt Montanya was on hand to network with key figures and show support. Below is a further recap of the event from another blog:
