El Globo Oscuro

El Globo Oscuro are a rock band from Venezuela who joined the Exquisite Noise roster in July of 2023. They have what we would describe as a compelling modern indie rock sound, one which is extremely catchy and compelling even if you don’t speak the language. Here’s how they describe themselves and their own history, though, translated directly from their Spotify profile:

El Globo Oscuro is a Rock/Noise/Post Punk oriented project founded by Evelio Gómez (vocals, lyrics) in 2005, Falcón / Venezuela. It was later joined by Samuel Mitchell (guitar, bass) Gustavo Restrepo (keyboard, bass) becoming over time an artistic collective where other musicians and creators of various genres intervened for the conceptual objectives of the band.

At Exquisite Noise Records, we’re always fans of searching around the globe for unique, fresh new sounds, and these guys certainly fit the bill. It’s a lot of fun, and you just might discover your next favorite genre in the process. Give them a listen and we are sure you will feel the same! Their first album with us, El Gusto Por Lo Fragmentario, is slated for a mid July release date. In the meantime, you can listen to a selection of their more popular tracks here:

Bishop Robinson/Steve Blood

(click on album cover to browse/listen)

This duo has crafted a compelling, unique sound that we’re not even sure how you’d begin to categorize – all we know is that we like it. If pressed you might say they play modern jazz of sorts, but with the occasional space rock transmissions from a distant planet and a whole lot of other curveballs thrown at the listener. Or something like that.

In 1963, Bishop started at one of the same clubs as Alice Cooper, Monterey Palace in Tucson, with a group called The Runaways. During this time they actually shared a bill with the Hollies, and the Spiders, which was Cooper’s first major band. He also went to high school with the legendary Linda Ronstadt.

Along with fellow Exquisite Noise artist Doc Van Etten, Robinson was in a Seattle based band in the 70s. They did the Don Steel show in LA and came close to being managed by a major. “Who knows, LA b.s., but we were being told that,” Bishop says now, reminiscing about those days. The band members were – and still are, in fact, very tight, living together in a 7 bedroom house just outside of Redmond, WA.

As for Steve Blood, he and Bishop were in a Tacoma based group called NuVines in the 1980s and 90s, releasing 4 albums. Tom Murphy, who has also drummed for the likes of Robert Cray and Albert King, was their drummer at the time.

Like many a lifelong musician, they seem to have come this close to fame on many occasions – but as anyone knows, there’s a certain crapshoot element to all of this. According to Robinson, there was a point in time he spent a brief stay at Dennis Wilson’s log cabin on Sunset strip. There was talk of Bishop doing some backup on an album, but it never happened. He also played with Jerry Miller of Moby Grape fame for a while. But the biggest potential break of all may have occurred with a band called MUF in the late 1960s. They headlined the 1969 Aldergrove Rock Festival and were in the process of negotiating a contract with Capital Records. They were neck and neck with another group that was also fighting for a contract. Capital called MUF’s manager and said, Robinson recalls, “you have far better promotion, but please send more recordings as so far, we like the other band’s recording.  Well he put us in a cheap studio with a case of wine and the rest is history. The other band was Grand Funk Railroad.”

He has also been lucky enough to play with the Sam Andrews Band at the Moore theater. This included Mick Taylor (John Mayall, The Rolling Stones), Sam Andrews (Lead from Big Brother, and the bass player from Cold Blood). Another accomplishment was to play with members of Moby Grape. While in Tucson, he also worked in development and put together the renowned Ages n Stages community event.

Msf Sadib Hermitude

Msf Sadib

Hailing from a country “that’s fused with acoustic flavor,” as he describes it, Msf Sadib is a Bangladesh artist on the rise. His unique though instantly compelling electronic compositions first came to our attention in November 2020, and he joined our roster soon after. MSF stands for Mohammod Shah Fattehullah, a name given to him by his grandfather. Apart from being an indie composing artist Msf Sadib earned a degree in Dentistry from Shaheed Suhrwardy Medical College. Here are some additional details provided to us from his official press release:

Music has its imprint on everybody. So it had on Sadib. Everything can be depicted in terms of music. Sadib is inspired by his very inner emotion that runs wild. Music has its flaws and it’s the flaws that make things interesting for him creating endless motion of sound.

Msf Sadib has always been up to finding new ways to concoct sound as he doesn’t want to wind up in any specific genre. Nevertheless, he yields toward lush and soulful jazzy sounds. Sadib’s influence ranges from 80’s classic, Neo-Souls, Bebops and modern experimental electronic music. From the crazy fusion comes the bizarre and perhaps some sounds that wants to touch across time. Whatever it is Msf Sadib wants to touch the higher ground, where thoughts end music philosophy breaks the way. And you may find him just at those crossroads.

Besides music Msf Sadib loves writing. He has written stories in magazines like Youthwave and in the national daily newspaper Prothom Alo. He also secured 14th place in top 20 winner list of “Synthmaster Annual Track Contest 2020” held by KV331 audio.

Msf also adds that, “wherever stakes are high the dice should roll regardless of the destiny.” It’s an interesting creed we haven’t heard before, one that seems to match his approach to music and life. Indeed, he admits this is “perhaps the soul philosophy” of his tiny world – one that has us eager to see where this journey takes him. Ka O Kha is his most recent single, and we find this one of the more unexpected yet compelling electronic compositions we’ve heard in a while. He also creates his own distinct, unforgettable artwork, which you can see on the Youtube clips for Bizarre By Own Right, as well as his many other compositions:

No Escape Dreamscape EP cover

No Escape

No Escape is an American musician and songwriter based out of Philadelphia. His passion for creating music began at the age of eight when he got his first guitar. At the age of twelve, he began writing electronic music using Digital Performer. This was the catalyst that pushed him into his journey of music production. Heavy rotation of mainstream and underground music genres, like techno, breakbeats, new wave, rap, death metal and electronica, have shaped his style over the years. No Escape has a diverse musical taste, with Cut Copy, Cannibal Corpse, and $uicideBoy$ being some of his major influences. While he incorporates the influences of a variety of artists and musical genres, No Escape is committed to creating new sounds and experimenting with different styles. Check him out!

Nick Bowen

Nick is a breakout artist who has called the upstate NY town of Webster his home from the day he was born. He’s been writing and playing music for about a decade, with a primary focus on guitar – although he also lends his talents to the occasional keyboard, harmonica, accordion, and whatever else might be needed. He cites Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Van Morrison among his many, mostly classic rock oriented inspirations. Recently his song Fillin’ Up Balloons was featured as lead-in music on The Tony Kornheiser Show.

His captivating single Why So Trying? kicked off 2020 in typically melodic fashion. Nick also recently joined forces with Cameron Ralg on a spirited cover on the Bob Dylan classic, I Shall Be Released. And if this weren’t enough, the amazingly prolific Bowen also frequently collaborates with Kevin Johnson. While Nick’s solo offers trend more toward what you might call indie folk, his efforts with Kevin typically have more of a full band sound to them. More recently, Nick has also released an imaginative re-interpretation of the R.E.M. classic Strange Currencies, too. But in whatever guise, these are all catchy offerings, with smooth vocals, clean production, and solid pop hooks! So give a listen below and be sure to follow these guys in all the right places:

Alex Fehr

Alex Fehr's

Alex Fehr, “Legend of the Lone Wolf”

This multi-instrumentalist from Pennsylvania plays everything well,  and has a real gift for hummable hooks! His style is somewhat reminiscent of your favorite guitar heroes from the 70s and 80s (Van Halen, Satriani) but with a distinctly modern twist.

Alex first joined our roster in 2015, and soon after we released his epic instrumental suite, Legend of the Lone Wolf. After this, he almost immediately began work on the follow-up. It’s four years in the making, but finally, in August of 2019, we were proud to release his album, Life Is A Dream (Spring). Finally, in early 2023, he delivered the smoldering 7 track effort Tomorrow Never Knows, which as always features his ultra creative guitar work. The wait proved well worth it as this is another musical movement which flows seamlessly from track to track, displaying an impressive range of styles and textures. Tim Orrahood

Musician Tim Orrahood performing live.

This exciting veteran composer and performer has played all the guitar work on a Led Zeppelin tribute album featuring John Corabi and Cypress Hill, among others. He recently released his debut EP with us, Vacscene. His sound can best be described perhaps as a modern take on that classic rock vibe we all know and love.

In May of 2019, he also contributed a track to our Chill Before Serving compilation, the latest in a label-wide series.
